Assa lies in the pre-Saharan south of Morocco, in the Guelmim-Oued Noun region. From above, the town reads as a compact cluster of streets pressed against a valley floor. The palm grove curves along the watercourse, and wide open desert surrounds everything else. On a map, this contrast between the dense settlement and the empty land around it is the most striking feature.
The town is known for its old ksar, a fortified earthen village on the slope above the oasis, and for the zaouia and religious gathering tied to it. The newer quarters spread out on the flatter ground below. Here the streets run in straighter lines, and the fields of the oasis mark a softer boundary than any wall.
