Auxerre stands on the left bank of the Yonne in northern Burgundy, its old town climbing a hillside above the river. Seen from the water, the skyline is dominated by the Gothic Cathedral of Saint-Étienne and the abbey of Saint-Germain. On a map, their location shows how tightly the medieval town was packed onto the slope above the quays.

These wide avenues follow the line of the former fortifications and give the historic centre a clear, rounded outline.
