Awgu lies in the southern part of Enugu State in southeastern Nigeria and is the headquarters of the Awgu Local Government Area. The town sits in uneven, hilly country, and from above its roads bend to follow ridges and valleys rather than forming a regular grid. Built-up areas cluster along the main routes and thin out into farmland and wooded slopes.
The wider area belongs to the upland belt that runs through Enugu State, where slopes and valleys shape where people build and farm. Awgu is made up of several communities, each with its own villages and traditions, and the roads that connect them give the map a branching, organic structure.
