Barneveld lies in the Gelderse Vallei, the low valley between the Veluwe to the east and the Utrechtse Heuvelrug to the west. The town centre is a small historic core around its church, surrounded by residential neighbourhoods built in the second half of the twentieth century. Beyond them, fields, farmyards and strips of woodland line the roads.
The municipality is closely linked with poultry farming and gave its name to the Barnevelder, a chicken breed known for its double-laced brown feathers. Local history also remembers Jan van Schaffelaar, a captain who jumped from the church tower in 1482 during a siege. A statue in the town commemorates the episode.

The railway crosses the town in a long straight stroke. It is a strong graphic element that divides the map and connects Barneveld with Amersfoort and Apeldoorn.
