Baud, also written Boudh, is the headquarters of Boudh district in central Odisha. It sits on the bank of the Mahanadi, one of India's major rivers, and the river dominates any map of the town. Its wide channel, sandbanks and shifting streams take up a large part of the frame, while the town's streets line the bank beside it.
The name is linked to the region's Buddhist past, and the area has old temples and Buddhist remains that draw visitors interested in Odisha's history. Around the town, the land is mostly agricultural, with paddy fields, villages and roads spreading away from the river towards the hills of the interior.
