Beimeng is a town in Shandong province, set in the wide farming plain that covers much of the region between the hills of the peninsula and the interior. From above it appears as a compact settlement with a clear main street and blocks of low buildings, surrounded by a rectangular pattern of fields that extends in every direction.
The rural grid is the most striking thing about its map. Straight lanes divide the land into long strips, villages sit at fairly regular intervals, and small watercourses cut across at angles.
