Blanquefort lies just north of Bordeaux, where the metropolitan area gives way to the Médoc. On a map the town has two sides. Residential streets and small centres spread across the higher ground, while the low land toward the Garonne opens into marshes cut by drainage channels. Local streams called jalles wind across this flat ground toward the river.
The town is known for the ruins of its medieval fortress, long associated with the Black Prince, and for its position at the gateway to the Médoc wine country.
