From above, the town centre is a small cluster of streets around a main square and church, with housing spreading along the valleys. Hills, farmland and patches of woodland lie all around.
The Fernão Dias highway, which links São Paulo to Belo Horizonte, runs close to the town and has shaped its connections and growth. The region's mild climate and hills have made it attractive for country houses and small farms. The town's name, meaning Good Jesus of Forgiveness, reflects its religious foundations.
