Bozcaada is small enough to take in at a single glance on a map, a rounded triangle of land lying off the Turkish coast south of the entrance to the Dardanelles. Its only town sits on the northeastern shore, facing the mainland, with the harbour and the fortress marking the edge where streets meet the water.
Away from the town the map opens up. Roads run out across low hills to beaches on the southern and western shores, and the interior is given over largely to vineyards, for which the island has long been known. Known in antiquity as Tenedos, it appears in the Iliad as the place where the Greek fleet waited out of sight of Troy.
