Grid meets hills
Straight arterial roads in the south give way to curving, contour-following streets in the north. This clear change in pattern defines the map.

Mapa
Brea Map Poster & Print
Brea lies on the northern edge of Orange County, California, where the flat basin meets the hills. From above, the southern part of the city shows the region's broad arterial grid, with shopping centres and business parks. Moving north and east, the streets start to curve, following ridges and canyons. Cul-de-sacs and winding residential roads climb into the hills, and open, dry land lies beyond.
The name is Spanish for tar, a reference to the natural asphalt seeps in the area, and the city grew with the oil fields developed there in the early twentieth century. Traces of that history remain in the hills. Brea is also known for its public art programme, which has placed hundreds of artworks around the city, and for the Brea Mall near the freeway.
A Brea map poster shows the meeting of two American landscapes: the orderly grid of the basin and the curving, contour-driven streets of the hills. The freeway defines the western edge, and Carbon Canyon leads away to the east. It is a strong example of how terrain shapes suburban street patterns.

Oil-field hills
The hills north of the city were once busy oil fields. Today they appear as open land and winding roads above the neighbourhoods.
Freeway edge
The freeway along the western side draws a firm line, with the mall and commercial districts gathered around its interchanges.
