Brighouse Map Poster & Print
Brighouse grew up where the Calder valley widens between Halifax and Huddersfield. From above, its structure is set by water. The River Calder curves along the southern side of the centre, and the Calder and Hebble Navigation runs beside it, widening into a canal basin close to the shops. Streets climb away from the valley floor on both sides, and Rastrick sits on the higher ground across the river.
The town's growth came with textiles and the mills that lined the waterways. Many of those buildings still stand, and the basin now holds moored narrowboats rather than working barges. Brighouse is also known across the brass band world for the Brighouse and Rastrick Band, one of the most successful bands in the tradition. The M62 passes a short distance to the north, linking the town to both sides of the Pennines.
On a Brighouse map poster the river, canal and railway run in parallel through the lower part of the frame, while terraced streets pack the slopes above. The contrast between the long, smooth lines of the valley and the short, repeated rows of housing gives the print a strong, layered structure that suits the monochrome styles well.

River and canal together
The River Calder and the canal run side by side through the valley. Their paired curves are the clearest feature of the whole map.
Terraced slopes
Rows of terraced housing step up the hillsides toward Rastrick and the northern edge of town, drawn as dense, rhythmic bands of parallel streets.
