UNC quadrangles
McCorkle Place and Polk Place form a north to south axis of lawns and paths through the old campus. Their clean rectangles stand out clearly against the curving streets around them.

Mapa
Chapel Hill Map Poster & Print
Chapel Hill spreads across the rolling Piedmont of North Carolina, and from above it looks less like a grid than a network of winding roads threaded through woodland. Creeks such as Bolin Creek cut shallow valleys through the town, and neighbourhoods follow the contours rather than straight lines. To the west, Chapel Hill runs almost seamlessly into Carrboro.
At the heart of the map is the University of North Carolina, the first public university in the United States to admit students, in 1795. Its historic core is organised around two long quadrangles, McCorkle Place and Polk Place, with the Old Well between them. Franklin Street runs along the northern edge of campus as the town's main street.
A Chapel Hill map poster captures that relationship between campus and town: the formal rectangles of the quads, the orderly blocks along Franklin Street, and the looser suburban loops fading into the trees. It is one corner of the Research Triangle, alongside Durham and Raleigh, but on paper it has a character all its own.

Franklin Street
The town's main street runs along the edge of campus, lined with shops and restaurants. On the map it reads as the straight line where university and town meet.
Creek valleys
Bolin Creek and smaller streams wind through wooded ground, and the road network bends to follow them. This gives the outer neighbourhoods their loose, organic pattern.
