Châtenay-Malabry lies in the Hauts-de-Seine department, about ten kilometres southwest of central Paris, and its map is unusually green for the inner suburbs. The Forêt de Verrières borders the town to the south, the Parc de Sceaux lies just to the east, and the Vallée-aux-Loups forms a wooded pocket within the town itself, breaking up the streets with large areas of trees.
The Vallée-aux-Loups is best known as the home of Chateaubriand, who lived and wrote there in the early nineteenth century; his house is now a museum. Elsewhere, the town is known for the Cité-jardin de la Butte-Rouge, a large garden city built from the 1930s onward, whose curving streets, stairways and low housing blocks set among lawns remain an important example of social housing in France.
