Chelsea is one of the smallest cities in Massachusetts by area, covering less than three square miles just north of Boston. It is surrounded on three sides by water. The Mystic River runs along one side, Chelsea Creek along another, and the Island End River along a third. From above, the city is a tightly packed wedge of streets between these shorelines.
The Tobin Bridge carries Route 1 over the Mystic, landing in Chelsea and cutting across the city on an elevated line. Along the creek, fuel terminals and industrial sites supply much of the region. Chelsea has long been a city of immigrants, and its dense housing and busy squares reflect that history.
