Chitrakoot Dham, also known as Karwi, is the headquarters of Chitrakoot district in the southern part of Uttar Pradesh, close to the border with Madhya Pradesh. The land here begins to rise from the Gangetic plain toward the Vindhya range, and the map shows the change. Low hills and wooded ground surround the town, and a river winds through the landscape nearby.
The wider Chitrakoot area is revered in Hindu tradition as the place where Rama, Sita and Lakshmana spent part of their exile, as told in the Ramayana.
