Corfu is the northernmost of the main Ionian Islands, lying just off the coasts of Albania and mainland Greece. Its outline is shaped like a sickle: wide and mountainous in the north, where Mount Pantokrator rises above the narrow strait facing Albania, then tapering south into a long, low tail of olive groves and villages. The west coast faces open sea, with cliffs and sheltered coves.
Corfu Town sits on the east coast between two Venetian fortresses, the Old Fortress on a headland and the New Fortress above the port. Its old town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, a dense maze of lanes opening onto the Spianada, one of the largest squares in Greece. Centuries of Venetian, French and British rule left a layered townscape, including the arcaded Liston promenade, modelled on the rue de Rivoli in Paris. South of the town, the Achilleion palace, built for Empress Elisabeth of Austria, overlooks the coast. On the west side, Paleokastritsa gathers a monastery and several bays around a rugged headland.
