Deva Map Poster
Deva is in western Transylvania, on the southern side of the Mureș valley, and is the seat of Hunedoara County. The defining feature of its map is the citadel hill, a steep, isolated volcanic dome that rises directly above the centre and leaves an irregular green space among the streets. Around its base, the town spreads across flatter ground toward the river and the railway.
The medieval fortress on the summit has been rebuilt and restored several times, and an inclined lift carries visitors up from the town. At the foot of the hill, the Magna Curia palace houses the county museum, and the central park and pedestrian streets form a compact civic core. In Romania the city is also known as a training centre for women's gymnastics.
