Eccles lies in the City of Salford, a few miles west of central Manchester. It is known far beyond the region for the Eccles cake, the small currant-filled pastry named after the town, and for its place in the industrial history of the Manchester area.
On the map Eccles is surrounded by waterways and transport routes. The Bridgewater Canal passes to the north and west, and to the south the Manchester Ship Canal forms a wide straight channel. Nearby, the Barton Swing Aqueduct carries the Bridgewater Canal over the Ship Canal, an unusual piece of Victorian engineering. The M60 and M602 motorways sweep around the town's edges.
