Finsterwalde sits in southern Brandenburg, in the lowland region of Lower Lusatia. From above, the town has a clear centre. A small core of older streets holds the market area and the town's Renaissance palace, and from there roads spread outward in several directions. Beyond them are residential areas, green spaces and open fields, all on almost level ground.
The town is widely known in Germany as the Sängerstadt, the town of singers. The name comes from a popular song about the singers of Finsterwalde, and the town has kept the nickname and the singing tradition alive. The palace, with origins in the sixteenth century, is one of the older buildings in the centre and stands just beside the historic core.
