Mapa
Gates-North Gates Map Poster & Print
Gates-North Gates is a census-designated place covering the built-up part of the town of Gates, directly west of the city of Rochester in Monroe County. It is a mature inner suburb, and its map shows a dense network of residential streets from the middle decades of the twentieth century. Houses sit on regular lots, and the pattern is interrupted only by the larger blocks of shopping plazas, schools and parks.
What gives the area its distinctive shape is transport. Interstate 490 runs through on its way into Rochester and the Interstate 390 corridor passes along the eastern side, so their ramps and interchanges form bold loops among the houses. Greater Rochester International Airport lies just to the south, and its runways add a set of long, straight lines at the edge of the composition.
The mix of quiet streets and heavy infrastructure creates a surprisingly graphic image. A Gates-North Gates map poster draws the expressways as sweeping curves over a fine-grained grid of homes, a portrait of Rochester's western suburbs as they really look. It suits long-time residents, people who grew up in Gates and anyone looking for a reminder of home in western New York.
