Gemert is a town in the east of North Brabant and the main centre of the Gemert-Bakel municipality. For centuries it had an unusual status. It was a commandery of the Teutonic Order and stayed an independent lordship until the end of the eighteenth century, and its castle, surrounded by water, is still the town's most recognisable landmark.
On a map, the historic centre shows up as a compact knot of streets around the central square and main street, with the castle grounds nearby. Newer residential neighbourhoods surround this core in wide rings. Beyond them lies typical Brabant farmland, divided into regular fields by lanes and drainage ditches.
