Godda sits in the northeastern corner of Jharkhand, in the Santhal Pargana region, and serves as the headquarters of the district that shares its name. From above it reads as a small, dense core of short lanes and irregular blocks, with a handful of main roads leaving it in different directions. Past the last houses the lines thin out quickly, and fields, ponds and scattered villages take over the frame.
The town is a modest place of around fifty thousand people, and its map has no grid or planned avenues. Streets bend to follow old paths and property lines, meet at loose junctions and gather near the market and the administrative buildings.
