Horsens sits at the inner end of Horsens Fjord on the east coast of Jutland. From above the fjord is the strongest element: a long, narrow inlet that reaches right into the town, ending at the harbour. The old centre lies just behind the waterfront, and newer neighbourhoods spread out over the gently rolling land around it.
The town is known for its former state prison, which closed in 2006 and is now a museum and a venue for large concerts. Horsens is also the birthplace of the explorer Vitus Bering, who gave his name to the Bering Strait. The E45 motorway passes to the west, linking the town to the rest of Jutland.
