Jask lies on Iran's southeastern coast in Hormozgan province, on a small cape reaching into the Gulf of Oman east of the Strait of Hormuz. From above, the town sits on a low, flat spit of land. The sea curves around it, and a long, empty shoreline runs east and west, backed by arid plains and distant hills.
The Jask map poster is defined by its coastline. The cape gives the town an unusual outline, water wraps around much of the built-up area, and the streets are set out on a fairly regular plan between the shore and the airport and port facilities. Beyond the town, few roads cross a landscape of sand, lagoons and dry riverbeds.
Jask's position near the entrance to the Persian Gulf has long made it strategically important. In the nineteenth century it was a station on the Indo-European telegraph line linking Britain and India. Today it is home to port and naval facilities and the terminal of a major oil pipeline, while the town itself remains small and quiet.
