Kottur lies in western Tamil Nadu, south of Pollachi, on the gently sloping plain that runs up to the Anaimalai Hills. The town itself is compact, a knot of streets gathered around its older core. Around it, the land opens into the regular blocks of coconut plantations and irrigated farmland that this corner of the state is known for.
On the map, the contrast between town and countryside is striking. Inside the town, streets are short and closely packed, with lanes branching off in several directions. Outside it, long field boundaries and irrigation channels draw straighter lines across the page. To the south the terrain begins to rise towards the hills, and the Aliyar reservoir sits not far away at their foot.
