Lake Neuchâtel is the largest lake lying entirely within Switzerland. It stretches in a long, straight line from southwest to northeast, with a very even shoreline and few islands, so the map is defined by its proportion rather than by its detail.
The northwestern shore rises to the Jura mountains, with the city of Neuchâtel spread along a slope above the water. Yverdon-les-Bains lies at the southwestern tip. Along the southeastern shore, the Grande Cariçaie wetlands form one of the largest natural lakeshores in the country.
