Rail through the centre
The railway runs diagonally across the borough. The angle it cuts through the street grid is the defining line of any map of Lansdale.

Mapa
Lansdale Map Poster & Print
Lansdale grew around the railway, and the map still shows it plainly. The tracks cut diagonally through the borough, and downtown gathers where Main Street crosses them near the station. Around this crossing sits a tight grid of nineteenth- and early twentieth-century blocks. Toward the borough line it gives way to looser suburban streets, and then the surrounding townships of Montgomery County take over.
The borough was incorporated in the nineteenth century as a stop on the North Pennsylvania Railroad. Trains still link it with Philadelphia on the regional rail network. Small streams rise nearby, including the upper reaches of the Wissahickon Creek. They add a few irregular green corridors to a town otherwise shaped by straight lines and the geometry of the rail line.
A Lansdale map poster shows the borough as a whole: the rail line, the station area, the downtown grid and the neighbourhoods fanning out from them. It suits commuters, longtime residents and anyone who remembers Main Street. It looks especially sharp in a narrow frame in a hall or kitchen.

Main Street crossing
Downtown gathers where Main Street meets the tracks near the station. Shorter blocks and denser buildings mark the historic commercial core.
Suburban fringe
Beyond the older grid, curving residential streets and cul-de-sacs spread toward the borough line. They show how the town grew through the twentieth century.
