Lublin grew on a raised spur above the Bystrzyca River, and the map still shows why the site was chosen. The Old Town is a compact oval of narrow streets on high ground. The castle hill stands just to the north-east, separated from it by a short dip. Below both, the river valley opens into meadows and parkland, a wide pale band between the historic core and the districts beyond.
West of the Old Town, beyond the Kraków Gate, Krakowskie Przedmieście runs as the main axis of the nineteenth-century city, lined by larger blocks and squares. In 1569 the Union of Lublin joined Poland and Lithuania into a single commonwealth. The castle's Holy Trinity Chapel, with its medieval Ruthenian-Byzantine frescoes, is one of the city's most distinctive sights.
Further west lies a large academic quarter. It is home to Maria Curie-Skłodowska University and other institutions, with campus buildings set in green space. To the south, the Zemborzycki Reservoir widens the Bystrzyca into a lake edged by woods. Castle and chapel
Lublin Castle stands on a separate rise north-east of the Old Town. Its courtyard holds the Holy Trinity Chapel, known for frescoes painted in the early fifteenth century.
Zemborzycki Reservoir
South of the city, the Bystrzyca is dammed into a broad reservoir ringed by forest and beaches. This open shape of water anchors the bottom of the map.
