Lüdinghausen is in the Münsterland, the flat, green region of North Rhine-Westphalia known for its moated houses. The town calls itself the Dreiburgenstadt, the town of three castles: Burg Lüdinghausen, Burg Vischering and the remains of Burg Wolfsberg. From above, their moats and ponds show up as neat rectangles of water among the streets and parkland.
Water runs through the whole map. The Stever river winds through the town, and the Dortmund-Ems Canal passes to the east, a long straight waterway contrasting with the river's curves. Between them, the historic centre forms a compact cluster, and newer neighbourhoods spread outward into the flat farmland typical of the region.
