Macheng lies in northeastern Hubei, where the plains meet the southern slopes of the Dabie Mountains. On a map the city sits in a river valley. Its built-up area stretches along the lower ground, and hills and mountain ridges rise on several sides, crossed by winding roads and scattered villages.
The urban area combines an older core of denser, irregular streets with newer districts of wide roads and large rectangular blocks. The river running through the valley divides parts of the city, and bridges link the two banks. Past the edges, terraced fields and forested slopes take over, so the city's outline follows the shape of the land.
Macheng is known for its mountain scenery, especially the azalea season on Guifeng Mountain, when the slopes turn red and pink in spring. The surrounding Dabie region also has a strong place in modern Chinese history.
