The meseta
The city centre sits on a long plateau between two rivers, so the street grid forms an elongated, tapering shape with steep edges falling away on both sides.

Mérida Map Poster & Print
Mérida occupies a terrace in the Venezuelan Andes, a raised plateau with the Chama River on one side and the Albarregas on the other. That setting gives the city its elongated shape. The centre stretches along the length of the terrace, with streets running in long parallel lines and short cross streets between them. On either side, the ground drops away to the river valleys.
The historic core follows a colonial grid around Plaza Bolívar and the cathedral, while newer districts extend along the plateau and down into the valleys. Mérida is home to the Universidad de Los Andes, one of the oldest universities in Venezuela. It also has the Mukumbarí cable car, which climbs toward Pico Espejo, close to Pico Bolívar, the country's highest peak.
A Mérida map poster traces one of the most dramatic urban settings in South America. In black and white, the plateau becomes a dense, elongated band of streets, the two rivers frame it with soft curving lines, and the steep terrain around it leaves wide empty margins. It suits anyone who studied at the university or grew up beneath the Sierra Nevada.

Colonial grid
Around Plaza Bolívar the streets follow the regular colonial pattern of square blocks, a tight and ordered geometry at the heart of the city.
Chama and Albarregas
The two rivers run roughly parallel along the flanks of the plateau, framing the city with curving lines that meet further down the valley.
