Hillside streets
Residential streets bend around the hill in short, irregular segments, forming a tight, organic pattern very different from the flatter, planned blocks elsewhere in Boston.

Mapa
Mission Hill Map Poster & Print
Mission Hill is a neighbourhood of Boston, set on a hill between the Longwood Medical Area, Roxbury and Jamaica Plain. The map reflects its topography: along the flatter northern edge, large institutional blocks and wide avenues dominate, while the hill itself is covered by narrow, curving residential streets that climb and double back to handle the slope.
The neighbourhood takes its name from Mission Church, the Basilica of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, whose twin towers are a familiar sight on Tremont Street. Much of the housing consists of triple-deckers and brick rowhouses, and the area is home to many students from nearby colleges, as well as staff from the hospitals just below the hill.
A Mission Hill map poster shows two scales of city side by side: the large footprints of medical and academic buildings along Huntington Avenue and the fine grain of houses on the slope. To the west, the Riverway and the Muddy River, part of Olmsted's Emerald Necklace, add a soft green edge to the composition.

Institutional edge
Along Huntington Avenue, hospitals and campus buildings occupy large blocks, creating broad shapes that contrast with the small parcels on the slope.
Emerald Necklace
The Riverway and the Muddy River run along the western side, a winding green corridor designed by Frederick Law Olmsted that frames the neighbourhood.
