Netphen is not a single compact town but a municipality of many villages spread across the hills of the Siegerland, north-east of Siegen. On a map, it appears as a scatter of settlements in the valleys, each with its own small street network, connected by roads that follow the watercourses through large areas of forest.
The river Sieg rises within Netphen's territory before flowing west through Siegen toward the Rhine. The Obernau reservoir lies in the municipality as well, and its elongated lake is one of the clearest shapes on the map. Much of the higher ground belongs to the wooded uplands that border the Rothaargebirge.
