Nijkerk sits at the transition between two very different Dutch landscapes. To the south and east the land rises gently toward the Veluwe; to the north and west it drops into low, open polder that runs toward the Nijkerkernauw and the chain of border lakes separating the old mainland from Flevoland.
The historic town centre is small and tightly drawn, with streets converging on the Grote Kerk, whose tower has long been a landmark across the flat country. Around this core, later neighbourhoods spread out in more regular patterns, and the railway and main roads link the town toward nearby Amersfoort.
