Pamiers lies in the Ariège department of southern France, on the river of the same name, north of the Pyrenees. It is the department's largest town and the seat of its bishop. On a map, the historic centre forms a compact, irregular core beside the river, with newer districts spreading across the flat valley.
A series of canals, historically used to power mills, runs through and around the old town, adding thin, deliberate lines of water to the street pattern. On a hill at the southern edge of the centre is the Castella, the site of the former castle, now a park. The cathedral of Saint-Antonin stands in the old centre.
