Portsea Island
The city is laid out on an island, so the coastline defines the whole composition. The narrow Ports Creek channel to the north completes an outline that most maps quietly hide.

Mapa
Portsmouth Map Poster & Print
Portsmouth is unusual among British cities because most of it occupies an island. Portsea Island is bounded by Portsmouth Harbour to the west, Langstone Harbour to the east and the Solent to the south. Only narrow channels separate it from the mainland to the north. From above, tightly packed terraced streets fill the island almost edge to edge.
The city's naval history shows clearly on the map. The Historic Dockyard on the western shore holds HMS Victory and the Mary Rose, and the Spinnaker Tower rises over the harbour at Gunwharf Quays. On the southern shore, Southsea Common opens a broad green band behind the seafront, and remnants of old fortifications line the coast toward the harbour mouth.
A Portsmouth map poster makes the island shape instantly recognisable. Water surrounds it on three sides, a fine grain of Victorian terraces crosses the middle, and dockyard basins and harbour channels mark the edges. It is a city of strong outlines, which is exactly what minimalist black and white linework shows best.

Historic Dockyard
Dry docks, basins and long slipways on the western shore create a precise, angular pattern. This is home to HMS Victory and the Mary Rose and is still an active naval base.
Southsea seafront
Southsea Common and the promenade run along the southern edge, a wide open strip between the dense terraces and the Solent, framed by old fortifications near the harbour mouth.
