Pugalūr lies in Karur district of Tamil Nadu, on the banks of the Kaveri. The river dominates any map of the area. It is a wide channel with sandbanks and islands, running past the town on its way east toward Tiruchirappalli and the delta. Irrigation canals branch off it, and the land between is a patchwork of fields and villages.
The area is known for industry as well as farming. A large newsprint and paper mill and a sugar factory operate nearby, and their sites appear on the map as big, clearly bounded parcels. They stand out against the finer grain of village streets and field boundaries. The town itself is compact, with lanes loosely arranged along the main roads.
Hills near the town hold some of the oldest inscriptions in Tamil Nadu. These early Tamil-Brahmi records name rulers of the Chera line and are valued by historians of the Sangam period.
