Valley floor grid
Downtown and the older neighbourhoods are laid out in a regular grid across the flat valley floor, which gives the northern part of the poster a tidy, even rhythm.

Mapa
Puyallup Map Poster & Print
Puyallup sits in the Puyallup River valley in Pierce County, east of Tacoma, and its map is a clear study in landform. The older town covers the flat valley floor with a regular street grid. To the south the land climbs sharply onto South Hill, where later development spreads out in curving roads and cul-de-sacs.
The city was founded by the pioneer Ezra Meeker, whose restored mansion still stands near downtown, and the valley was long known for hops and later for daffodil bulbs. Puyallup is also home to the Washington State Fair, one of the largest fairs in the country. Its extensive fairgrounds form a distinct block on the map close to the centre.
A Puyallup map poster shows the contrast between the gridded valley and the hills that rise around it. The river winds along the northern side of town, and rail lines and highways run through the valley. The landform defines this place as much as planning does, and on a clear day Mount Rainier rises beyond the frame to the south-east.

South Hill slopes
South of downtown the ground rises steeply and the streets change character. They bend along the hillside and open into the looser suburban pattern of the plateau above.
Fairgrounds and river
The Washington State Fair grounds form a large block near the centre, while the Puyallup River curves along the northern edge of town toward Commencement Bay.
