Royal Leamington Spa grew fast in the early nineteenth century around its mineral springs, and the map still shows it. North of the River Leam, the Regency new town is laid out on a clear, planned pattern. The Parade runs uphill, lined with crescents, squares and terraces, while the older settlement sits on the south bank.
The river divides the town. Jephson Gardens and the Pump Room Gardens follow its banks, and Victoria Park and the Mill Gardens stretch the green further along. To the south, the Grand Union Canal cuts a long curve through the terraced streets. Warwick lies just to the west, close enough that the two towns nearly meet.
Queen Victoria granted the prefix Royal in 1838. Today the town is also known as a centre of the British video game industry, sometimes nicknamed Silicon Spa. A Royal Leamington Spa map poster brings the Regency order, the green river corridor and the canal together in one frame.
