Selb lies in Upper Franconia, in the far northeast of Bavaria, a few kilometres from the Czech border. From above, the town fills a gentle valley. Its older streets gather around the centre, and later residential districts spread up the surrounding slopes. Forest presses in on almost every side, so the built-up area has a clear, irregular outline.
