Seen from above, Singur is a loose cluster of lanes that gather around a railway line and then spread into open farmland. There is no rigid grid here. Village paths follow field edges and ponds, and the built-up area thins out gradually. On a black-and-white print, that mix of dense core and scattered hamlets gives the sheet a soft, grainy texture.
Singur sits in Hooghly district, within reach of Kolkata. It became widely known in the late 2000s, when a planned car factory and the farmland taken for it led to protests. The dispute became a turning point in West Bengal politics. The land around the town is still largely agricultural, and the fields remain the most striking thing on the map.
