Tarma lies in Peru's Junín region at around three thousand metres, in a valley on the eastern side of the Andes. The mountains shape the map completely. The town's centre fills the valley floor in a compact grid of streets around the main square, and the built-up area climbs as far up the slopes as it can before giving way to steep ground and fields.
The town is often called the Pearl of the Andes, known for its mild climate and flower growing. It is especially known for its Holy Week celebrations, when residents lay out long carpets of flower petals along the streets for the processions. Tarma also sits on the route from the highlands down toward the Amazonian edge of central Peru.
