Tarnowskie Góry is a town in Upper Silesia, north of Katowice, that grew up around silver and lead mining from the late Middle Ages. Its historic lead-silver-zinc mine and underground water management system was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2017. Beneath the town and its surroundings, galleries and drainage adits stretch for kilometres, including the Black Trout Adit, which visitors tour by boat.
At street level, the old town is small and neat, with a rectangular market square and a tight ring of streets around it. Beyond it, the plan becomes looser, with residential districts, railway lines and parkland spreading out, then woodland to the edges. The mining past is visible in the green areas and sites that mark where shafts once reached the surface.
