Ventanas lies in the province of Los Ríos, in the wide, low basin that drains toward the Guayas river system. The land here is almost perfectly flat, so the town's plan is shaped less by relief than by roads and waterways. From above, a tight grid of blocks forms the centre, with streets thinning out into farm tracks and fields at the edges.
The surrounding countryside is intensively farmed, and Ventanas is widely known in Ecuador as a centre of maize production, often called the country's corn capital.
