Wegeda lies in the Amhara Region of northern Ethiopia, on the high plateau that holds much of the country's farmland. The town serves as a local centre for the rural communities around it, and its layout reflects that role. Shops and services line the main routes at its core, and houses and compounds spread out from there into the surrounding landscape.
From above, Wegeda has an informal, gently irregular form. Roads curve with the terrain, paths slip between plots, and the line between town and farmland is soft rather than sharp.
