West Palm Beach Map Poster & Print
West Palm Beach is laid out along the western shore of the Lake Worth Lagoon, a long, narrow body of water that separates the mainland from the barrier island of Palm Beach. From above, the city is a tidy grid of streets and avenues running east to the waterfront, with bridges crossing the lagoon and the Atlantic just beyond. Interstate 95 and the rail corridor run north to south a little inland.
The city grew from Henry Flagler's plans in the 1890s, when his railway reached this part of Florida and he built resort hotels on Palm Beach. West Palm Beach began as the town where workers and services were based, across the water from the resort island. Today its downtown, with Clematis Street and the waterfront promenade along Flagler Drive, is the centre of Palm Beach County.
A West Palm Beach map poster captures the contrast that defines the place: the regular mainland grid, the smooth band of lagoon, and the thin island strip holding the ocean edge. In black and white, the water becomes a quiet, open shape that frames the dense blocks of downtown. It works well for anyone who has lived near the lagoon or spent winters here.
