Az Zāwīyah lies on Libya's Mediterranean coast, roughly fifty kilometres west of Tripoli. The coastline here is long and fairly straight, and the city spreads inland from it, so on a map the shore forms a clean edge along the top of the frame while streets and roads extend southward into a flat landscape of farms and orchards.
The city is best known for its oil refinery and port terminal, one of the most important in the country, which occupy a distinct industrial area near the coast. Away from the refinery, the urban pattern is made of residential districts, a central market area and main roads running parallel to the sea towards Tripoli and the Tunisian border.
