Bafoulabé lies in the Kayes Region of western Mali, at one of the most significant river junctions in West Africa. Here the Bafing and the Bakoy rivers meet to form the Senegal River. The town's name is usually explained as meaning the meeting of two rivers, and the map makes that meaning plain.
From above, the rivers dominate. Two broad channels approach from different directions and merge into one, and the town occupies the land beside the confluence. The street pattern is modest: a loose network of roads and lanes, with more open ground and scattered compounds toward the edges. The dry savanna surrounds it.
