Beaune's old centre is easy to read from above. A ring of boulevards traces the line of the former ramparts, enclosing a tight, irregular core of lanes, squares and courtyards. Several bastions and stretches of wall still survive, and on a map their angular profile shows where the fortifications once turned. Outside the ring, the streets loosen into later neighbourhoods, roads and rail lines.
The town is the traditional wine capital of Burgundy. Its most famous building, the Hôtel-Dieu of the Hospices de Beaune, was founded in 1443 by Nicolas Rolin, chancellor to the Duke of Burgundy, and is known for its patterned glazed-tile roof. Each November the Hospices hold a charity wine auction that draws buyers from around the world.
