Boppard lies on the left bank of the Rhine in the Upper Middle Rhine Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage landscape. Here the river makes its largest loop, the Bopparder Hamm, curving in a broad bend that is the most memorable shape on any map of the town. Vineyards climb the steep slopes on the outside of the bend.
The old town stretches along the riverbank, with a promenade, quays and the railway following the water. Boppard has Roman roots, and sections of the walls of the late Roman fort still stand in the town centre. Above it, a chairlift climbs to the Gedeonseck viewpoint, from which the curves of the Rhine appear to break into separate lakes.
